Spalding enjoy upset derby win over Stamford A in County League showdown




Spalding hosted Stamford A for what was a David versus Goliath battle in the County League first division.

Bottom of the table Spalding quickly raced into a 20-shot lead against third from top Stamford at Castle Sports Complex, finally winning the tie 111-65.

On rink one, Spalding jumped out to a 17-1 lead after ten ends, staying ahead for the rest of the match.

Meanwhile, Kevin Ekins was outstanding in his rink's 32-10 victory over youngster Owen Aspinall and skip Roger Martin.

Another rink skipped by John Needham took two four-counts against Stamford's Jon Earl and his rink conceded two four-counts against John Needham, while Martin Simpson's quarter recovered from a 13-6 deficit to beat Adam Warrington's.

The Simpson rink's feat was all the more remarkable as he won 16 shots in the last 11 ends.

In fact, Spalding's only rink to come up short was the one led by Maurice Elding who went down 19-15 to Stamford quartet Richard Allam, Dave Hudson, Jay Travis-Jenner and skip Trevor Collins.

Currently, Spalding are second bottom with 59 points from eight matches, while Boston A are in pole position to be crowned champions on 94 points from their eight matches.
