GOSBERTON pace ace Ashley Sandall looks to have a bright future ahead of him after becoming 400m under-15 national champion.

The 14-year-old ace picked up the accolade at the UK National Indoor Championships, held at Birmingham.

It proved a season-defining moment for Sandall, who is enjoying his first full season in athletics after joining the Lincolnshire Athletics Academy last year.

On top of training four nights a week at the Princess Royal Sports Arena in Boston, the speedy teen has also competed in some of the best stadiums around the country.

“I’ve been competing in open events at Birmingham, I went to the Sheffield northern championships and got a medal there, Lea Valley, London and Manchester,” said Sandall. “I enjoy it, it’s a challenge.

“I did a little bit of training last summer but this is my first single season that I’ve done so far.”

Ashley’s mum Nicola added: “I’m very proud. He’s come a long way since last May when he really started and he’s put in a lot of hard work and a lot of training.

“A lot of it is down to his coach Dr George Skafidas, who he’s got a lot of admiration for.

“He’s come on in leaps and bounds and I am really proud.”
