Maxey race ace grabs podium position after storming through field

Young Alfie Garford secured an incredible third place and a podium finish after starting in last position in the second round of the British Kart Championship.

This was the best result yet for the11-year-old from Maxey, near Market Deeping, in only his second British championship race.

He travelled to Fulbeck Kart Club in Lincolnshire having previously impressed at the first round with a third place grid slot for the finals and a couple of eighth place finishes, which saw him given the top rookie award.

After competing in some club races at Fulbeck in the weeks leading up to the race, Alfie was in good shape..

Saturday's qualifying could have gone better, Alfie salvaging 10th place after another competitor blocked the racing line leading on to his flying lap

But on Sunday, he finished fifth and eighth in the heats to line up in grid seven for the pre-final.

However, in this race he was hit from behind in a four-kart pile up and his kart was too badly damaged to take any further part in the race meaning he started the final in 20th and last place.

Alfie picked off a few drivers by the end of the first lap and continued to do this over the next eight or nine laps until he found himself in seventh position.

By the start of the final lap, he was on the back bumper of the sixth place kart, and, with some more overtaking, he was able to come home in an outstanding third place.

After the race, Alfie said: "I knew my pace was good, so I just had to stay out of trouble and get through the field without being held up.

"The racing is so close in this class that its rare for a leader to pull away from the pack, so they always need to defend on the final few laps, which also slows them down, so I never gave up chasing them down as I knew I could snatch some places towards the end.’

The whole event was streamed live by Alpha Live and can now be found on YouTube page, along with the feature ‘Fulbeck track walk with Alfie Garford’ where they selected Alfie to go round with Alpha's commentator to give an insight into how the best and fastest way round the Fulbeck circuit is.
