THE torch is on its way! Many of us will have been tracking it on the television or online day by day, seemingly in pouring rain much of the time, but this coming week it will be actually here among us in South Holland.
But it’s not actually just one torch that’s coming, since there is a whole line of torches along the route. The heart of it is a flame, a single light passing from torch to torch. Unlike the torches that flame looks weak and easily snuffed out so it needs protecting and shielding, but that is what is so special.
A flame means warmth and security, a fire to gather round and cook on, and it means light, light to find our way, light to read by, truth to look up to, something to pass on to the next generation.
No wonder the old road sign for a school was a flaming torch.
And people of faith in particular know about torches. As it says in the Bible: “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light on my path.” There are a good many dead ends and wrong turnings in today’s world, but with a clear light to follow you won’t lose your way.
