POPPY APPEAL: My dad would raise a glass to Kathleen

Have your say

I was amazed to read about Kathleen Barsley in Spalding still collecting for the Poppy Day Appeal at the age of 90. If anybody desires a gong for services, surely it is this lady.

What a fantastic role model this lady is – 90 years of age and still going strong.

Collecting out in all weathers is no fun and requires determination plus real spirit and I would add that my late father used to do the same thing till his passing.

Considering he served out in the Far East in World War Two and been through the wringer as he put it, he still went out with his comrades selling poppies because, as he often said: “A lot of our mates never came back and if I can’t go out and do this task I would be letting them down.”

I think he would raise a glass to this lady as it’s gladdening that there is a – dare I say it – British spirit still going.
