Richard Davies, would-be Police Commissioner, supports local MP John Hayes’scall for greater police numbers in Lincolnshire (Free Press Letters, October 9). He notes that “for too long” the Lincolnshire Police have seen their budgets lag behind.
Mr Hayes has evidently repented since his vigorous and successful campaign only a very few years ago, to deny the police the funds needed to bring the force up to strength. He was a prime cause of the current under-provision. For my part, I would sooner not see politically chosen commissioners, since they would always be susceptible to party influence on matters such as budgets. If we must have these commissioners, let them at least be independent.
