With reference to the reader’s photo of Welney.

The flooding of the Ouse washes at Welney may be an interesting sight for visitors, but is not good for ground nesting birds.

In the winter these flooded washes are a home to the whooper swans.

In the Spring they should dry out as an important site for nesting lapwings.

The flooding this year, to save homes in the area, decimated these nests.
