YOUR LETTERS: Church tweets were patronising

I thought it odd that the Church of England should decide to patronisingly tweet prayers for stroke victim Richard Dawkins.

It is of interest to me as I’m always pleased to be reminded that Mr Dawkins, author of The Selfish Gene, has consistently taken more care to coherently explain human evolution in the universe than any pastor with an Adam and Eve story.

It may be that the church desperately desires publicity now and again and this is a new take on the ‘trendy Vicar’ angle that it has always been keen to promote.

As Thomas Paine tells us, the religious mainly “seek pomp and revenue in pretended imitation of the founder who lived a life of humility and poverty”.

Thomas, pre-dating Darwin and Dawkins, also seems to support the selfish gene theory, maintaining that some prayers of the faithful are purely selfish.

It seems to me that the tweeting vicar who thought up this publicity wheeze may have miscalculated public opinion with regard to respect Mr Dawkins.
