Spalding Town Tennis Club juniors compete in Mary Burgess cup
By Michaela Roper
It was a glorious morning of tennis as Spalding Town Tennis Club saw Spalding Juniors compete in the annual Mary Burgess cup.
The competition was held in celebration of the former treasurer, Mary Burgess (87), who is in her 66th year of membership at the club.
Chairman Carl Newell said that supporting young tennis enthusiasts “was always something she was keen on.”
Mr Newell also praised Mary’s commitment to the club and its juniors.
The tournament hosted two categories for young players - the children played five sets each, with Neli Malekina winning for the U10s and joint winners Charles Dallas and Luke Orton awarded the U14s title.
The club is home to more than 40 junior players who enjoy coached sessions throughout the week.
Among the young members is Hayden Bingham (18), who has been a presence at the Spalding club since the age of 10. He participates in U18 competitions across the country, and now plays for both the Lincolnshire County and national teams. The youngster works with the club’s coaches to support the junior team, and helped to organise the weekend’s event.
“The club is just growing now,” added welfare officer Amanda Halifax who also commended the club’s coaches for their efforts in Weekend sessions are often held to boost the junior programme, as well ladies-only nights, and summer camps.
