The death had been announced of Trooper Isaac Frederick Welbourn, of the 18th Lancers, who was the son of Mr and Mrs J Welbourn, of Commercial Road, Spalding, who was killed in action.

His mother said: “He died fighting – a Briton.”

Closer to home, Mr Elvan Brown had completed 41 years as cemetery keeper at Spalding.

Mr Brown had three sons serving in the British Army, one of whom was at that time recovering from injuries sustained in France.
