Wheat growers' pain could be farmers' gain
The wet, late, spring has, as expected, been followed by a hot, dry and testing growing season.
Spring crops, especially potatoes, have suffered, due to delayed planting into damp seedbeds. This has led to disease and moisture stress and a shortened growing season which will considerably limit crop yield.
Last year, we had a big potato crop with low prices; this year will be a small crop and higher prices. No other industry operates under such wildly fluctuating market conditions.
