Wombles of Spalding Common receive shout out from BBC Radio 2 breakfast show host Zoe Ball

The hard work of volunteers who are helping to keep their town spic and span was celebrated by BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show Host Zoe Ball.

The Wombles of Spalding Common were given a special shout out by Zoe during her Tuesday morning show for their litter picking efforts, and she added: “What a lovely thing to do.”

Organisers of the group, which has more than 1,000 members, are launching a fundraising campaign to help fund the starter packs, which includes pickers, gloves and bin bags.

Sam Roberts said they have handed out £150 worth of litter pickers over five to six days and that the four organisers contributed £400 to fund the packs.

He said: “We want to keep supplying the equipment free of charge for people to go out and do it.

“Anything anyone can donate would be gratefully received and would make a massive difference.”

Since the group was formed at the start of this month, hundreds of bags of rubbish have been filled with litter picked from across the town.

Pickers have been busy in areas around the town including Holland Road and Castle Sports Complex, along with a nature reserve behind Spalding Rugby Club.

Enterprise Way and West Marsh Road have also been litter picked by the group who have collected masks and other protective equipment.

Ayscoughfee Hall School has also supported the effort by encouraging pupils and their parents to go out and litter pick.

Mr Roberts said people have been going out in all weathers, including the snow over the last weekend, to support the efforts.

He said: “We didn’t expect it as it was snowing. There must have been nearly 100 people out again in that weather.”

During the clean up volunteers have cleared up a wide range of items including abandoned shopping trollies, a plastic play house, clothing as well as a pair of purple pants.

But there have also needles and a lot of the nitrous oxide cannisters.
