Around 100 Weston workers packed luxury hampers for Marks and Spencer to give to guests attending The Patron’s Lunch – a big event on The Mall to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday.
Staff at Flamingo Flowers assembled a massive 10,500 of the M&S hampers on Saturday, working into the evening to ensure everything was ready for distribution.
The hampers included 40,000 sandwiches to be munched at the ultimate street party on Sunday.
A four-strong team from Flamingo was also there to lend support on the great day.
Flamingo Flowers managing director David Brown said: “We have been a partner of M&S for many years and it was a great honour for the business to be involved in such a prestigious event.
“I would like to pay tribute to the effort and commitment of all the employees involved, who played their part in contributing to what was a unique occasion and a celebration for the whole country.”
To everyone here today and those holding street parties elsewhere I would like to say thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you continue to give to me.Her Majesty the Queen
An official website described the M&S Patron’s Lunch hamper as “containing home-grown British produce for a picnic style lunch and afternoon tea”.
The hampers also earned some renown in another popular arena because, according to The Daily Telegraph, some found their way onto eBay with an asking price of more than £250.
M&S is a long standing customer of Flamingo for fresh flowers, hampers and gifting.
A spokesman for Flamingo said the company was approached in 2015 “to get involved in the event and were delighted to be able to do so”.
He said Flamingo had run the hampers and gifting activity for M&S for the last ten years and the work is done at Weston.
Sunday’s lunch on The Mall was the last big London event for the Queen’s official birthday. According to the BBC, the Queen told guests on The Mall: “To everyone here today and those holding street parties elsewhere I would like to say thank you for the wonderful support and encouragement that you continue to give to me.
“I hope these happy celebrations will remind us of the many benefits that can flow when people come together for a common purpose as families, friends or neighbours.”
• It was a rainy day and ponchos were handed out to many of the 10,000 guests.
