A Gedney Hill couple are making the most of seeing their combined weight plummet by more than 12 stone in as many months.

Bev and Fred Bezuidenhout can look forward to keeping up with their three grandchildren after shedding the pounds, helped by friends at their slimming group in Crowland.

A few years ago, Bev weighed 18st 11lbs while Fred topped the scales at 26st 13lbs.

But after discovering the benefits of healthy eating, the couple have seen their respective waist sizes drop from a 24 and 5XL to 16 and 2XL.

For their weekly slimming class at Crowland Royal British Legion Hall on Monday, Fred weighed in at 20st 1lb and Bev was 13st 2lbs.

Fred, a former security officer who now works for a transport business, said: "We started losing weight after I became ill in 2013.

"At first, we followed a slimming plan by ourselves and I lost more than 8st.

"But we got to a point where we were having ups and downs with our weight loss.

"So I told Bev that we needed to join a slimming group, although the one thing that held me back was the thought of being the only man there.

"But it wasn't as bad as I first thought and we love coming to the group now where we've made some good friends."

Bev and Fred, who together have two children, have collected a haul of awards from the group during the past year, including Man of the Year, Woman of the Year and Couple of the Year.

"We actually eat more now than we did before," Bev said.

"But now we're eating the right things and there are so many meals we can make that are really nice.

"It's all about healthy eating, definitely not a diet, and we come to the slimming group knowing whether we've gained or lost weight."

Bev, a hospital worker in Peterborough, confessed to a former life of eating on takeaways while nursing her husband during his illness.

She said: "We both wanted to be able to run around with our grandchildren, something we couldn't do before.

"It's helped that we've been losing weight together and our slimming classes are more of a date night for us."

Slimming group leader Sarah Phillips said: "Bev and Fred were determined in wanting to change their lives by losing weight and they've done incredibly well."
