A daughter whose mother is in the last stages of Alzheimer’s is completing a 24-hour 100km walk this weekend to raise money for a charity which gives support to those dealing with the illness.

Clare Wyles (40), of GedneyDrove End, will be setting off to complete the London to Cambridge Ultimate Challenge from 7am on Saturday, to 7am on Sunday.

Clare is hoping to raise money for the Alzheimer’s Society, which has helped her mother and the family following the diagnosis five years ago.

Clare told The Guardian: “The charity is very good and so is all the support they have given to us.”

Clare’s mum was originally misdiagnosed with an overactive thyroid, but five years ago the family were told the correct prognosis.

Since then, Clare’s dad, who is now in his 70s and disabled, looks after her mum, and has support from a live-in carer.

Clare and her sister also do what they can to help.

On her JustGiving page Clare, who works for Greencore, in Pinchbeck, also wrote: “This disease needs to be eradicated.

“It is the worst experience of my life, to lose one of the most important people in your life – knowing that you are actually going to go through this twice is awful.

“My mum was so vibrant and full of life, the most amazing, beautiful kindest person I have ever known.

“The last 10 years have been truly a living hell.

“For those of you that know me I have tried to hide the pain and hurt, but it has been hard.

“For my two little boys to come to me and ask me why their nanny doesn’t know their name, no words can describe that. . .”

This will be the second charity walk Clare has done, having previously completed the 10k Memory Walk in Peterborough.

“I thought, if I can do 10k, then I can do 100,” said Clare, whose family will be in Cambridge on Sunday morning to support her as she crosses the finishing line.

Originally Clare wanted to raise £500 for the charity, but the money raised now stands at more then £750.

The Alzheimer’s Society carries out care and research for the disease and other dementias.
