This next-gen reboot of the game that pioneered the first-person shooter genre pays fitting homage to the legend.

The single-player campaign gleefully captures the essence of what made Doom stand out many years ago – as you’re sent straight to nerve-jangling demonic hell with a plethora of iconic weaponry but limited ammo and health packs to survive – and on this front it absolutely delivers.

Unfortunately the multiplayer provides a very lacklustre experience, which is refreshingly offset by the excellent SnapMap level editor – which inventively allows you to customise gameplay.

It might not quite offer anything truly innovative in gaming terms – but it shows this franchise is a long way from doomed.
