Two mums are taking on a gruelling 20-mile run over Mount Snowdon to help children with cancer.

Gosberton mother of 10 Val Gillick, 47, and Boston West Primary School teacher Amanda Smith, 38, were inspired by a young boy who is quietly battling cancer away from the spotlight.

They’re fundraising for Addenbrooke’s Charitable Trust (ACT) to help young cancer patients from our area who are treated at the Cambridge hospital.

Although Val and Amanda are taking on the Rat Race Man Vs Mountain, the pair say that’s nothing compared to the bravery shown by young cancer patients.

Amanda explains: “A former pupil at the school where I work is facing his own mountain at the moment.

“Please help us to provide support directly to the hospital that has become almost his second home.”

Amanda, a mum of three, told us: “I just felt devastated for him and I just felt that I wanted to do something.”

Val has turned a room at her home in Mill Lane – which runs almost parallel to High Street – into a charity shop for ACT and took a little over £200 in the first week from Gosberton residents who were quick to take the cause to their hearts.

Val said: “There are so many children around here who have cancer.”

The shop is tiny, but she can sell small items like clothes, toys and books.

Amanda and Val have taken on many big challenges in the past, but the Man Vs Mountain on September 5 will see them face a series of land and water-based obstacles including a guided abseil called the ‘All Out Vertical Kilometre’.

The duo are also lining up further fundraising events including a bubble football tournament and a charity ball.
