Long Sutton in Bloom is £2,000 better off after a three-month stint as the town’s first-ever Community Champions.
The group was nominated by shoppers at Co-op in West Street where people using a dividend card to shop over the last three months triggered a donation to Long Sutton in Bloom. Its volunteers said thank you by landscaping an area outside the store and chairman Kay Jenkinson said: “We were surprised, honoured and thrilled to be chosen as the first recipients of this Co-op Community Champions award.
“We didn’t apply for it but the store selected us and asked us if we were willing to be its first chosen charity.
“It was an absolute no-brainer, but we didn’t expect the result to be so wonderful as it was.”
Lincolnshire Co-op’s membership and community manager Sam Turner said: “We think Community Champions will make more people aware that we share our profits, not only with our members but also their communities.
“It’s such an important part of who we are, so it’s something we want to promote.”
