Holbeach Community Centre is throwing a special party to mark its 30th anniversary this year – and the whole town is invited.
Organisers of the celebration on Saturday, November 2 at the centre on Fishpond Lane are hoping residents will help create a display of memorabilia showing its history ever since it was officially opened by Princess Alexandra in 1983.
The celebration, which starts at 7.30pm, features tribute band The Apple Core Beatles, Treble Nine Roadshow, a hog roast and a mobile bar provided by Holbeach firm The Old Exchange.
Cheryl Gratton, a member of the management committee, said: “It was a big day for Holbeach when Princess Alexandra came to open the centre and 30 years later, we’re trying to build up a bit of interest again.
“There aren’t many community centres that go on for 30 years without falling into disrepair, but we have 14 regular clubs and groups that use the one in Holbeach every week and it’s also booked most weekends for weddings, parties and charity events.”
Retired Holbeach builder Peter Ely, one of those at the centre’s opening in November 1983, said: “They invited me to do it because I gave them a flag pole and flag.
“I remember that Fishpond Lane was lined with people waiting to see Princess Alexandra who was very nice.”
Tickets for the 30th anniversary celebration are £15 and are available for over 18s only from Cheryl Gratton on 01406 426080 or Lizzy Coward on 01406 490379.
