With local schools still on summer holidays as well as many teachers, now is not the best time to ask them for help!

Tulip Radio has been tasked with organising the Christmas Light Switch on as part of a celebratory town centre weekend event over the last weekend in November, fully supported by Spalding Town Retailers Association. Shops will open for longer hours and many will have special Christmas promotions in a bid to fill the town with shoppers over the weekend.

Jan Whitbourn of Tulip Radio has been working tirelessly on the event since being asked early this month.

Already there is a noticeable impetus to the event with many local people keen to know what is happening and who is appearing.

The lights will be switched on at the culmination of a hectic afternoon of entertainment on Friday, November 28. Acts are now being booked to entertain the crowds in the lead up to the big event. A favourite for the crowds is always the Schools’ Choir Competition which aims to find the best choir on the day as decided by a jury of local traders and personalities.

Bakkavor has donated £1,000 in cash prizes to be divided between the first, second and third schools.

Newly arrived business Hughes Electrical of Sheep Market, will donate £1,000 worth of goods to the winning school. Additionally, Sainsbury’s has offered a unique tour of a bakery, fair trade or energy project that supports the current curriculum. Finally, Alley Catz has offered free bowling to the whole winning school.
