Spalding theatre: The Man Who Left is Not Th Man Who Came Home

In the British Theatre Guide’s recent review by John Johnson, he states ‘good verbatim theatre is not always easy to find… hurrah for The Man Who Left is Not The Man Who Came Home’. Coming to the South Holland Centre main stage next week, this play for contemporary times has been born out of writer Kevin Dyer’s wish to share the stories of women who see their husbands go to war only to come home as changed men.

In his research for the play, Kevin Dyer and Samantha Trussler (a real life military wife and British Forces Broadcasting Service radio presenter) conducted interviews with over 100 forces personnel and their partners. From the interviews, Kevin developed the play which is mostly told through the eyes of Chloe, the wife of soldier Ashley who is about to be deployed to Afghanistan. As the story of the couple unfolds, Samantha Trussler holds the play together through narration and commentary on how she felt facing similar experiences as a real life military wife.

Yes, the play covers issues pertinent to military personnel today such as government cuts, world conflict and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, but it is not a story about those subjects. It mostly asks how it feels when the person you love has changed forever, and in this respect, it is a universal story.
