Police in Spalding are taking a leaf out of the book written by popular American children’s author Dr Seuss and telling shoplifters “no Christmas for you”.

The message, codenamed Operation Grinch, will be backed up by “high visibility police patrols”, CCTV surveillance and the Shopwatch radio scheme in an effort to stop and catch people intent on stealing from town centre shops in the run-up to Christmas.

South Holland Community policing inspector Jo Reeves said: “As we approach the festive season, the shops get busier and shoplifters will seize that opportunity to do their Christmas ‘shopping’ without spending a penny.

“Therefore, we will be working with retailers to target offenders and combat the seasonal rise in offences that tends to occur at this time.

“Thanks to information sharing agreements between ourselves and retailers, we are able to share details and photographs of prolific offenders with local businesses to ensure that our town centres are not easy targets for thieves.”
