Being open about death and understanding the wishes of the people we care about can help to make the experience a more positive one, says Emma Warner.
The St Barnabas Hospice specialist nurse practitioner advises that just talking about it can help to remove some of the fear of the unknown.
This year’s awareness week theme is The Big Conversation, and that might be as simple as finding out what people you love really hope to achieve in life while they can.
Then the conversation might move on to end of life and people’s worries and fears around that, listening for the cues that suggest they are saying one thing while meaning another, all the while being supportive and respectful of each other’s wishes. Above all, Emma advises: “Have the conversation.”
