New trader joins Spalding market

A popular cake company was the newest trader to join Spalding Market earlier this week.

Sarah Woodrow set up Epulari Cake Company around three years ago and has been posting tray bakes to homes across the country.

Now she is trying an alternative avenue to sell her delicious cakes and set up ‘Hetty’ the renovated horse box on the Sheep Market car park on Tuesday but is also considering Holbeach and Boston markets.

Market stalls are now spread over Market Place and the Sheep Market since the lockdown restrictions were lifted in June.

Despite the best efforts of Storm Francis with its strong winds and rain, Sarah reported a steady trade.

She said: “It was good fun being on the market despite the weather on Tuesday morning.

“People are starting to feel braver and are coming out of their houses and starting to wander around the markets and to see what it has to offer.

“I fully intend to be back on Tuesday next week.”

Sarah has had a love of baking since childhood and this led her to start Epulari, which is Latin for ‘merry’.

She is now able to bake tray bakes, such as brownies, blondies and flapjacks, at her five star kitchen at home.

She offers a postal service which allows people to surprise loved ones or friends with a delicious cake.

Sarah said: “It was very busy during lockdown as people were using us to send birthday cakes or a ‘thinking of you’ present as they couldn’t see each other.”

Prior to lockdown, Sarah had purchased the renovated horse box and had planned to attend a number of events, which unfortunately were cancelled.

Sarah said: “It was in the shed so I thought ‘why not give the market a go?’.”

Chairman of the Market Traders Association Dave Burgess said he hopes that Sarah’s arrival will be the first of a number of new additions to the market.

He said: “It is good to have a new market trader and I hope that she enjoys her time on the market.

“Footfall seems to be picking up and we are seeing more shoppers out and about.”
