Mr E Pickworth Farrow (left), elder son of Mr and Mrs E W Farrow, of Spalding, had become the youngest Doctor of Science in the country in 1915.
He was just 23 and had been excused the usual examination on his thesis subject because of its excellence.
Long Sutton man, Quarter-Master Sgt Barton, was believed to be the town’s oldest volunteer at 48. He joined the Lincolnshire Yeomanry in 1915, and was transferred to the 21st Midland Rifle Brigade.
He said he felt “a lad today, and as fit as ever”.
