The list of local young men who lost their lives in the First World War continued to grow in 1916.

Mr and Mrs Thomas Staines of Wingland, Sutton Bridge, had heard their son, Pte T W Staines (pictured above left), had been killed in action.

A Lutton family also received the tragic news that their son had died.

Mr and Mrs Tolliday heard of the death of their son, Pte Jesse Tolliday (above), who was serving with the Lincolnshire Regiment.

He was killed in France on May 10, just when he was expected home on a few days’ leave.

Pte James Burt, of Bourne North Fen, also in the Lincolnshire Regiment, had also been killed in action.
