SUTTON Bridge community group The Big Bloomers have been awarded a £500 grant from the parish council.

The group, which works hard to make the town look nice, applied to the council for the money back in September, but the request was overlooked due to the clerk resigning.

At a meeting on Tuesday, vice-chairman Coun Christopher Brandon-King said he had found the application on the council’s computer.

He said: “Unfortunately we don’t have any money left in the (grants) kitty to meet this request.”

Coun John Grimwood said he thought the council should give the Big Bloomers as much help as possible.

He said: “Everyone in the village appreciates what they are doing. They are making a difference in the village and we need to give them as much help as we can.”

Coun Brandon-King suggested that if they were other funds available the request could be met from another kitty.

Coun John Preston said the group was given a grant early last year from the previous budget but they had not had any money during this financial year.

He said: “We have £5,000 in contingencies, £500 of which could be transferred to grants if we want.”

Coun David Wall proposed that was done and it was agreed.
