One of the founding Spalding Water Taxi pilots, Ron Pannel, bowed out after 12 years’ service at a dinner surrounded by colleagues.

After working at Perkins Engines for more than 20 years, Ron saw the launch of Spalding Water Taxi as an ideal opportunity to mix work with one of his favourite pastimes, boating.

Operations manager Anthony Grunwell said: “Over the 12 years Ron has met and carried many local people and visitors to Spalding sharing his wealth of knowledge of local history, wildlife and humour.”

Ron, who lives in Spalding, was presented with a framed picture signed by his fellow pilots.

He isn’t leaving the water because he wants to spend more time with his wife on their narrow boat travelling the canals.

• Anthony told us: “The water taxi service has now finished for the season but we are continuing to run the self drive service and the narrow boat. Please contact us to secure your boat for the coming months. We especially would like to hear from people who want to have their celebrations parties on the narrow boat.”
