Spalding railway station to undergo £2.5million revamp




Spalding railway station is to undergo a £2.5million revamp and its Grade II listed three storey building is also getting a facelift, with retail units opening in it a possibility.

Network Rail will begin work in September to improve accessibility at the station by installing lifts to provide access to platform two.

Work will also take place to install tactile paving for the visually impaired, along with additional CCTV cameras and improved lighting on the footbridge. Work should be complete by March 2020.

And starting this month, East Midlands Trains is working alongside the Railway Heritage Trust to reinstate the windows that are currently boarded up at the station building, as well as restoring the interior floorboards and ceilings to their former glory.

The building will become weather tight with the potential for retail units to be opened for passengers in the future.

These works will take place over six weeks with no anticipated disruption to rail passengers travelling to and through Spalding station.

Network Rail route managing director Rob McIntosh said: “This vital work will improve the look and feel of Spalding railway station and improve the station for all passengers who use it and we are delighted to be working closely with East Midlands Trains and the Railway Heritage Trust.

“The installation of lifts and tactile paving will improve accessibility at the station and make sure we continue to provide a service which meets needs of the communities and economies we serve.”

East Midlands Trains area manager for Lincolnshire Sophie Hammond said: “The restoration of the building in the station will greatly improve the appearance and overall look and feel to our passengers who use the station regularly."

Railway Heritage Trust executive director Andy Savage added: “We are delighted to support this scheme, which reinstates the missing doors, windows and flooring, and we see this as the first stage in developing opportunities to use the empty space in the building once more."
