Major Barrell wrote home paying high tribute to the Spalding Territorials, and especially Cpl F C Peake.
He said: “He did wonderful work, dressing the wounded under shell fire. Peake is a wonderful fellow, and deserves the highest praise. Spalding ought to be proud of such men as he.”
Pte Frank Gooch described Cpl Peake as “a brick”, and reported him stopping in the midst of shell fire to pray for a dead officer.
