Miss Montgomery, the Spalding Nurse at the Front, was home on leave in 1915.
This newspaper carried a couple of pictures, one of Miss Montgomery visiting Cley Hall, then the home of Lieutenant and Mrs G F Birch.
In the first picture Miss Montgomery is seen on the steps leading to the lawn with Mrs Birch’s two daughters, Violet and Peggy, dressed up as Red Cross Nurses. Miss Montgomery was pictured in her ‘indoor uniform’.
The nurse told a reporter from this newspaper: “If I were to tell you of all the terrible sights I have seen out there I am certain there would not be a man in England whose blood would not so boil, and who would not feel so restless that he would want to rush right off to the firing line.”
