Midwives Barbara Hadfield, Felicia Tidy, Angie Robinson, Janet Eley, Pam Luff, Jenny Tucker, Gail Luke, Jane Ward and Jane Taylor were encouraging mums-to-be to use the maternity unit at Johnson Hospital in Spalding in 1995.

Fewer than 50 per cent of pregnant women in Spalding were choosing to give birth at the unit, which had had a total of 321 admissions in that year, but only 100 deliveries. The unit was able to offer a birth experience which fell somewhere between the hi-tech surroundings of a medical unit and a home birth.
