Bookmark of Spalding has selected The Abbeys of Lincolnshire by Ian Thompson as its book of the week.
This is a book of interest to all those who love this county and its heritage.
The book contains historical information on 12 different abbeys, priories, friaries, cells and preceptories.
Lincolnshire is not rich in monastic remains but, as the author sets out to show, there are some delightfully unexpected survivals as well as the ones that nearly everybody knows.
Also there are diaries, antique prints and at least one oil painting, from which we can obtain a better idea of what some of these places once looked like.
Of particular interest are the contemporary records which allow us to catch glimpses of daily life in the monasteries.
You can read about the prior who became a saint and martyr, the wayward canon who couldn’t be got rid of, impoverished nuns, turbulent friars and the tragedy of monks caught up in the Lincolnshire Rising.
The book retails for £10, but take the voucher in the Spalding Guardian of August 13 to Bookmark before Wednesday, August 19 for a 20 per cent discount.
