South Holland leader ‘more influential than Boris Johnson’

Have your say

SOUTH Holland District Council leader Gary Porter has been ranked as the 32nd most influential leader in local government.

Coun Porter featured in the nationwide poll drawn up by industry magazine the Local Government Chronicle, coming above national figures such as Labour MP Caroline Flint (number 45), Mayor of London Boris Johnson (joint 42nd) and Downing Street director of strategy Steve Hilton (number 33).

The poll is topped by local government minister Eric Pickles. The outspoken Tory meets regularly with Coun Porter, who also holds the position of deputy chairman with the Local Government Association.

The same publication also highlighted Coun Porter as second in its list of ten people who have played a key role in developing shared working in local government.

That follows the council’s decision to merge back office services and management teams with East Lindsey and Breckland district councils.

Coun Porter said: “This is in recognition of what we have done as a whole council in South Holland.”
