Spalding area residents urged to get behind bids to re-open Donington and Deeping St Nicholas railway stations to passengers

People power will be needed as a bid to re-open two South Holland railway stations will be submitted later this summer.

Sir John Hayes says there is a
really strong case for passenger traffic to be accepted at stations in Donington and Littleworth, Deeping St Nicholas.

Earlier this year, the Government announced that it is allocating £500million to reopening historic lines and reconnecting towns.

Sir John Hayes is working with Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum along with local councillors in order to submit a bid in June.

He said: “We are very keen to proceed with the bid and now I want to meet with the county, district and parish councils.

“There is a really strong case to be made for both stations.”

Sir John has highlighted that station buildings remain at both Deeping St Nicholas and Donington, which still has its track.

Improved tourism and links to tourism are among the benefits on offer if the bid was approved by the Government.

Sir John said: “In the case of Deeping St Nicholas, the line to Peterborough is critical as a lot of people commute there and go to college in the city.

“In Donington and the
return of Matthew Flinders, the tourism potential is significant and a lot of people will want to come to see Matthew Flinders’ grave.

“We are determined to
explore this further. We have to make a viability case and plans have to feasible and we will want to work with the local community.

“If people could signal their support to me that would be a great help.”

Sir John is asking people to fill in the coupon and send it to him to show that there is an
appetite for railway stations to be reopened.

He will then be able to produce these coupons while bidding for the funding later in the year.

Sir John said: “If I could produce a host of letters and coupons from local people, I am sure it will be an impressive part of our argument.”

Spalding and Peterborough Transport Forum Chairman George Scott told us last week that reopening Littleworth station could reduce traffic congestion around the town.”
