Spalding store targeted in smash and grab raid

Smash and grab raiders escaped with designer clothing from a Spalding shop last night.

A concrete block was thrown through a side window at Robert Goddard in Vine Street at about 11.10pm.

Two people were involved in the incident but fled before police arrived.

The store has been frequently targeted over the years.

Robert Goddard operations director Steve Shephard said: "Town centre CCTV saw a couple of people in The Crescent area.

"One of them threw a large concrete block at one of our side windows - that gave way and they entered the shop and stole a number of designer shirts and some shorts, and made off before the police could attend and our keyholder could attend."

Mr Shephard said the value of the items stolen is unknown at present.

The business is due to move to the former Market Place premises of Revills Jewellers - the front of which is protected by a heavy metal grille - and hope the added security will bring an end to the raids.

Mr Shephard says he's lost count of the break-ins at the Vine Street store - but supposes it would be seven or eight over the years, although added security there means they have had little trouble in the last couple of years.
