Youngsters learned to respect the environment and the planet as part of a new scheme.

Crowland’s Abbey 345 PreSchool and South View Community Primary School have teamed up to create their very own forest setting.

Staff at the pre-school contacted the Woodland Trust for information about their ‘Free Trees’ scheme, and children congregated last Wednesday (December 1) to plant their first seeds.

Kathy Crouch, Early Years manager at Abbey 345, said: “We have a thriving forest school element to our setting and currently walk our children to a lovely woodland area in the community – which our children adore and get hours of enjoyment from - we know how lucky we are to have access to this, and are well aware of the impact of deforestation across our world.

“The children who start at pre-school would potentially have 9 years between us and the school to see a tiny sapling grow to a young tree above their head height.

"It’s a long term project – but hopefully one all the children will benefit massively from - in terms of both learning and the knowledge that they are making a real difference to their planet.”

Forest School leader Jane Harriss added: “The children were just amazing. We had a small group come over from the school to help out, and everyone was very keen on digging the holes and finding the sticks that will support our tiny trees. In maybe six months time we might be planting more so we get a wave effect where they can see the different stages of growth.”

By planting a tree as part of the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy, the schools are set to receive a letter from her in thanks.
