Holbeach sink hole: Councillor calls for road to be repaired properly

A busy South Holland road is closed after a section has collapsed for a second time in less than 12 months.

Anglian Water is now investigating the reasons why there is an estimated 4ft hole in Boston Road in Holbeach after the road gave away on Sunday night.

Residents have been expressing concerns for some weeks that the road was sinking further after seeing an increase in traffic due to a diversion from nearby Spalding Road, which has been closed.

Shoppers are still able to use the town centre via Park Road and Church Street.

An Anglian Water spokesperson said: “We are currently on Boston Road South in Holbeach investigating a collapsed sewer. The road has been closed with a diversion route in place to allow us to carry out our investigations and the necessary repair work, to get things back to normal.

“No customer facilities are affected and we hope to have this repaired as quickly as possible. We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this is causing.”

Police were informed at 7.35pm on Sunday that there was a problem with the road and that a closure was in place from 10pm.

This is the second time in less than a year in which a large hole has appeared in Boston Road, near to Holbeach Primary Academy. In April last year, a diversion was set-up after a sink hole appeared in the road.

Holbeach councillor Tracey Carter is calling for the problems to be properly repaired.

She said: “They keep doing patch repairs each year but something has got to be done between Anglian Water and Lincolnshire County Council to resolve this once and for all.

“We have been able to see a change in the road over the last week and a half when there has been more traffic going over.

“I would like to make it clear that people can still get into the town to use their favourite shops.”

Coun Richard Davies, Lincolnshire County Council’s executive member for highways, said: “We are working with Anglian Water to help repair and reopen Boston Road as soon as possible.

“We appreciate that this will cause a lot of disruption, so would like to thank residents for bearing with us.”
