Ram Krishna Bashyal of Gurkha Oven in Spalding shares a recipe for Salmon Tikka.

Customers at Gurkha Oven in Spalding like to try out the tasty dishes they enjoy from the menu at the restaurant in their own homes.

Friendly proprietor Ram Krishna Bashyal says one of the meals that is popular with diners is the Salmon Tikka.

The spices work really well with the salmon to create a tasty and very healthy meal that is actually quite easy to prepare.

He shares the recipe here:

You will need

Fresh salmon fillets (cut in to pieces – about 500g)

2tbsp mustard oil

1tbsp fresh ginger/garlic paste

2tbsp yogurt

1tbsp ground cumin

1tbsp ground coriander

½ heaped tsp ground turmeric powder

½tbsp hot chilli powder

½tbsp garam masala

Salt (to taste)

½tbsp mint sauce

¼tbsp of cumin seeds


Mix all the spices together in a large bowl – salt, cumin, coriander, turmeric, chilli, garam masala, mint sauce ginger/garlic paste, yogurt and half the oil.

Add the salmon to the paste and mix gently together, making sure all the salmon pieces are covered with paste.

Add 1tbsp mustard oil then cover the bowl with clingfilm and keep in the fridge for between two and 24 hours.

Pre-heat the oven to 2000C then place the salmon piece by piece on to the oven tray.

Cook for ten minutes and then turn over the salmon and cook for another five minutes or until it is cooked through. Alternatively cook the marinated salmon on the barbecue.

Salmon tikka is delicious served with rice, salad and naan bread.

It also goes well with a simple cucumber yoghurt salad made with chopped, de-seeded cucumber, lemon juice, plain yoghurt, a pinch of salt and pepper, dried or fresh finely chopped chilli and coriander to decorate.
