A recent letter criticised South Holland District Council and therefore the Conservative controlling group, for using taxpayers’ money to publish a newsletter entitled South Holland Now.
Readers will notice that they no longer receive this newsletter four times a year and have not done so for some 12 months.
The sole purpose of the newsletter was to inform residents of changes to their refuse and recycling collection days, when there was a bank holiday
The accusation was that the newsletter was politically motivated and not for the benefit of our taxpayers. Nothing could be further from the truth, as proven by the fact that SH Now is no longer published.
The sole purpose of the newsletter was to inform residents of changes to their refuse and recycling collection days, when there was a bank holiday. Over 7,000 households were inconvenienced by the need to change their collection days and it was essential that the council gave them plenty of notice of this.
Given that the newsletter was being distributed to every household in this way and the added cost would be modest, it was decided to also include other council related information that residents might find useful.
However, accepting that busy families sometimes overlooked the day changes and could therefore be left with two weeks of refuse and recycling, we decided to look at different ways of working.
With the cooperation and support of our collection crews, we were able to introduce bank holiday collections of refuse and recycling – Christmas period excepted – meaning that every household in South Holland now receives the same level of service.
This also meant that there was no longer any need to publicise collection day changes, four times a year. This in turn meant that there was no longer a need to distribute the SH Now newsletter, hence its demise.
