PICTURE GALLERY: Spalding St Norbert's triumph in primary school Quicksticks tournament
Eleven teams from six schools took part in a School Games Quicksticks hockey competition on the all-weather pitch at Surfleet.
Organised by Agilitas Sports as part of the Lincolnshire South East School Sport Partnership's London Olympics 2012 legacy, the contest involved pupils from Moulton, Moulton Chapel and Spalding.
Quicksticks is a fast-paced version of hockey played in primary schools, where teams of four compete on smaller pitches with fewer rules than the adult game and there are quick rotations of players so lots of children get to join in.
The day started with ten Year 12 Sports Leaders from Spalding Grammar School running teams through warm ups and coaching. There was then an hour of pool matches.
Among the larger schools, which had A and B sides, four teams went on to the play-offs, with Moulton John Harrox Primary School's A and B teams fighting it out for third place - the A team taking the bragging rights.
A thrilling and very high quality final was played between two Spalding teams, with St Norbert's Catholic Primary School A clinching a 4-3 victory in the very last minute against Ayschoughfee Hall School.
Spalding Parish Church of England Day School, Spalding Monkshouse Primary School and Moulton Chapel Primary School all did really well, had great fun and showed excellent improvement.
The Monkshouse B team won the small school/B team competition and their A team were winners of the School Games Value competition which was for the team showing the most respect.
Oragniser Rupert Gibson, of Agilitas Sports, thanked the Grammar's sports leaders, who had trained hard over the previous weeks. He also thanked the Surfleet Play and Recreation Charity for use of the pitch and the toilets.
For youngsters interested in taking up hockey, both Long Sutton and Spalding clubs run junior sessions on Saturday mornings, offer drop in sessions and provide loan sticks for new players. Further details can be found at www.longsuttonhockey.co.uk or www.spaldinghockeyclub.co.uk
