Students at Peele Community College, Long Sutton, have been given their own personal momento of the Queen becoming Britain’s longest-reigning monarch.
The 89-year-old passed the previous record set by Queen Victoria at 5.30pm yesterday when her reign reached 23,226 days, 16 hours and approximately 30 minutes - surpassing the previous record set by her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria.
The coin, showing the Royal Crown on one side and three trumpet players on the other, was given to students by staff on Wednesday.
A Peele Community College spokesman said: “This afternoon, to mark the 63rd anniversary of the start of the Queen’s reign and Her Majesty becoming the longest-serving monarch in British history, students at the school received a commemorative coin purchsed by the school at the request of headteacher Simon Gilman.”
Speaking on Wednesday about the new landmark, the Queen said: “Inevitably a long life can pass by many milestones and my own is no exception.
“But I thank you all and the many others at home and overseas for your touching messages of great kindness,” she added.
