Spalding Flower Parade return could deliver a 'fun factor'

A district councillor has thrown his support behind fresh hopes of bringing Spalding’s Flower Parade back to life.

Although South Holland District Council doesn’t plan on providing funding for the event, Coun Gary Taylor, portfolio holder for communities and facilities, says he will support it.

His enthusiasm comes after Pinchbeck campaigner Stephen Timewell launched a plan to restart the legendary event over the weekend, as reported in the Lincolnshire Free Press.

Coun Taylor said: “I support the initiative and, from what I have seen, there’s a modern feel to the idea which would be relevant to the present day, rather than a replication of the flower parades of old.

“The council doesn’t have a budget to go towards this event but if we can support in any way, through giving advice, encouragement and guidance we will.

“There’s an opportunity here and with the power of local people something can be done. It won’t be easy to do, but if people are hardworking and put the effort in there’s many ways it could happen, especially with crowdfunding and businesses who have funding pots for community events.”

Coun Taylor says that he had faith that the parade would return in the future, after it came to an end in 2013, and believes that the community gatherings for the Jubilee have added to the rejuvenated enthusiasm for the event.

He said: “I always supported the flower parade in the past when it took place and it really did bring generations out.

“People of all ages saw the floats and then the younger people would go out and support the pubs and bars too.

“I always believed that the flower parade could return and I think it has taken the Jubilee for people to realise what’s been missing from the town.

“It can happen. It can be reinvented with a new energy and can bring fun, music and a feel good factor.

“I wish them well with this and absolutely will support it as much as possible.”

There’s already been a huge outpouring of support for Stephen Timewell’s ‘dream’ plan..

Taking to our Facebook page, several readers left also their comments.

Julie Winkett said that the plan to bring back the parade was a ‘brilliant idea’ and ‘exactly what the town needs again’.

Donna Bailey thought that the plan would be ‘so good’ for Spalding, adding that it ‘really shouldn’t have stopped’.

Rik Garner argued that real tulips should be used, adding: “That is our history, our heritage, our attraction to the outside world and to be totally honest, it was a world beater!”

Val Mansfield said that the parade should remain in the town, which was a sentiment echoed by many.

She said: “Taking it to Springfields wasn’t a good idea. Keep the visitors in town, boost trade.”
