Here's the weekly Word on the Ground column, this time written by NFU South Holland branch group secretary Andrew Cross...

Sunday, June 12 marks Open Farm Sunday, an annual event where farms across the country open their gates to the public.

The event is an opportunity to showcase our industry and equally a great chance for those not involved day to day in agriculture and horticulture to spend a fantastic, fun day out with the family. Experience how our farmers and growers ensure produce arrives at our door whilst remaining custodians and advocates of the environment.

It is increasingly important that we support the UK agricultural and horticultural sectors to secure the future supply of excellent quality home grown and reared produce, support your local economy and protect the exceptionally high standards which we are fortunate to benefit from.

All Open Farm Sunday events across the country, including many within striking distance of South Holland, are listed at farmsunday.org and are supported by household names from across the food supply chain.

Indeed, we are extremely fortunate to have one of the largest events right on our doorstep with Michael Sly and the team at MHS Farms Ltd, Park Farm, Thorney once again opening their farm gates to the public. Free entry, parking and Farm Safari are provided together with many other attractions for all the family.

Having attended events here before, I am confident that everyone who attends will have an unforgettable day out. Full details can be found at www.parkfarmthorney.co.uk

All of us at the NFU in South Holland and the East Midlands hope that you will take the opportunity to support your farmers and growers who in turn will ensure you have an informative and fun time.
