One regular reader - there might even be another one or even two lurking about but they are keeping quiet about it - of this cultural column contacted me recently to inquire about assorted events as I seem, she said, to have come into contact with ‘many colourful, varied characters’ (to her credit she stopped short of saying idiots) that I sometimes mention.

I explained as always for starters I didn’t - or don’t - go looking for such wonderful people, plus there is no real risk of queue jumpers as I would have noticed them forming a line close by or their standing backwards so as to avoid any risk of strong winds or draughts in general.
