Three couples from the Spalding area were celebrating the New Year with new arrivals.
At Boston’s Pilgrim Hospital, the first to arrive on the labour ward in 2016 was little Jessica Isla Wand, at 34 minutes past midnight, weighing in at 6lb 14oz.
Baby and mum Emily Wand, 29, of Donington, were doing well and returned home the same day after Jessica’s dad, Paul, 35, had returned from a few hours sleep.
The proud dad is an emergency care assistant with the ambulance service, so he said he had been brushing up on his maternity skills just in case, but in the end they went in on December 30 for Jessica to be induced.
He said: “It took a little while, but mum and baby are fine. It was a bit weird as we kept an eye on the time and thought she would end up arriving on New Year’s Eve, but she just hung on until the New Year.”
This is the couple’s second child, and three-year-old daughter Hollie has been getting used to being a very helpful big sister. Paul said: “It is taking a bit of getting used to, you forget how small they are!”

They have let family and friends know via Facebook and been visited by both sets of grandparents after taking a day to get used to being back at home. Paul was taking some time off to help at home while Emily, a freight forwarder for a Far Eastern import/export business, would be taking a few months off.
○ It was a double birthday celebration for Gulsevim Gunduz, 21, of Kirton who gave birth to little girl, Elif, at 1.14pm at the Pilgrim Hospital.
Proud dad T.J. Halit Gunduz, 25, said his father Cemal Gunduz, was born 55 years ago on New Year’s Day as well. He said: “He was so happy and so proud to have the same birthday.”
The couple run Kirton Kebab Shop and Elif is their first child weighing 6lb 15oz when she was born.
T.J. said: “It used to be just the two of us in the house and now we have someone extra special.”
Although Elif was due on December 28, he said everything had gone smoothly, after they thought things might be more difficult with Elif being their first baby.
He said: “We are very excited. If she had been born a day later it would have been on our wedding anniversary, so it is going to be a busy couple of days.”
He said there had been lots of calls from well wishers and they were having family and friends to visit.
○ Finally, Jelena Cwikla, 30, of Spalding gave birth to baby boy Tymon at 6.57pm. He weighed in at 7lb 5oz.
Self-employed husband Lukasz Cwikla, 33, said it was a busy time with their new son being their third child.
He said: “The birth went fine. She was due on January 7 but Tymon arrived a few days early, so it was a nice surprise. Everyone has been sending messages and presents.”
