I am bemused at the report in the Free Press regarding councillors’ allowance rises.
Reading through it, the councillors pat themselves on the back for not burdening the rates pool by taking an unearned rise but then they set about ways of foolishly spending the money in other ways instead of either saving it or at least letting it remain in the general fund for the benefit of all tax payers.
To suggest each councillor should have a slush fund to spend on his/her pet project in his/her ward is very dangerous and open to all sorts of corruption risk.
Why should the tax payer be further burdened with payments to a charity over which they have no say?
Individually we give to charity of our choice. Leave the money where it truly belongs! Keep reducing your allowances and you might even reduce the rates!
