Over the moon Spalding theatre group reveals its new programme

An ‘over the moon’ theatre group has unveiled its programme of shows - including a brave new challenge for its talented stars.

Spalding’s Act II Theatre Company says it is ‘excited’ to finally be able to announce a full slate of shows - after Covid played havoc with its peformance schedule.

The list includes a first for the group with a harrowing and unusual ‘verbatim musical’ about the events around the attacks of the ‘Suffolk Strangler’ Steve Wright.

London Road is formed from interviews conducted by Alecky Blythe with residents in and around the Ipswich street where the serial killer’s crimes were carried out.

The tricky-to-perform show will be a test for Act II’s advanced skills group and is due to be on at the South Holland Centre on February 4 and 5 next year.

Director Karl Gernert said: “Not only are the words they use exactly the same but the rhythm of the music is built around rhythm of the speech and intonation - it’s fiendishly complicated.

“We like to throw them curve balls and give them things they haven’t experienced.

“This is so hard - it’s going to put ourselves and our students through the ringer if we are going to pull it off. It will be something special.”

Act II’s new programme kicks off with The Hunchback of Notre Dame, performed by the group’s 7-11-year-olds on November 11 and 13, aptly in Spalding Parish Church and Crowland Abbey.

That’s followed by Surfin’ and Singin’ - The Music of the Beach Boys at Broad Street Methodist Church on November 24.

After that, the theatre company makes its return to the South Holland Centre.

Act II will put on its 2021 Revue in December, on dates to be confirmed, followed by:

  • Madagascar Jr - A Musical Adventure and Bugsy Malone - both January 22.
  • London Road - February 4 and 5.
  • The Wardrobe/Education, Education, Education - March 3-5 (venue TBC)
  • All Shook Up - March 30 - April 2.

Karl added: “We are just so pleased to be back.

“More than once we thought are we ever going to be able to be here again. Now we are over the moon.

“If audiences are half as excited as our casts then we are in for a treat.”
