Holbeach St Marks Village Hall applies for gym extension
A village hall is aiming to move with the times to secure its future by constructing an extension for the gym.
Holbeach St Marks Village Hall Committee has applied to South Holland District Council to add an extension onto the back of the building to house the popular gym equipment.
The equipment had moved into the village hall last year after previously being housed in the nearby Bakkavor factory.
Since then, the gym has grown in popularity with more villagers using the equipment.
Committee member Coun Nick Worth said this is an ambitious project for the hall.
Coun Worth, who is South Holland District Council’s deputy leader, said: “If we can get a find a regular income it is going to make a big difference and makes the hall’s future sustainable.
“It will change the use of the hall. We used to have Mother’s Union, Women’s Institute and various other groups use it but sadly they have died away.
“We are trying to do different things. For us it is about getting a regular income which the gym would provide.”
It is hoped that the extension will include a cardio section along with a separate room for the weights.
The committee is also looking to renovate the existing changing rooms along with creating showers.
Coun Worth said: “Maybe in time a few of the committee would like to have a sauna as well.”
The village hall is awaiting costs for the project.
If planners approve the application, members hope to then go forward and applying for funding to build the extension.
Coun Worth said the current equipment in the hall is well used.
He said: “When it was at Bakkavor, a lot of Bakkavor employees used it but now I think local people are using it. It is getting a nice steady flow of people.”
