Spalding Western Relief Road: MP asks a cash-strapped council is underwriting the £57 million bill

MP Sir John Hayes is surprised by Lincolnshire County Council’s decision to earmark £57million to underwrite two sections of a controversial relief road planned for Spalding.

Sir John said: “With the contention about this road, the environmental impact and the uncertainty about its effects – including which particular route it takes – it’s very surprising that the county council should have decided to underwrite its cost.”

The MP says the decision is particularly surprising because it comes at a time “when councils are reportedly arguing that they are strapped for cash”.
